I’m having a great time playing around with lights in the dark for this week’s Light Effects contest. It’s a lot of fun and also something that’s really easy. So you have no excuse not to join in the fun and add some photos to our group pool on Flickr.

I’ve photographed the city lights view from my backyard before, but this shot has more of a moody and chaotic feel to it, which I kind of like. A little camera shake never hurt anyone, right?

It will be interesting to see what comes of this. I’m sure it’s going to be a pricey system, but I do like the overall design. Taking a modular approach to a digital camera is rather shocking in this industry, where (I’m sure) planned obsolescence is part of the game.

Of course, there is this. They certainly know how to market, that’s for sure.

We’ve been enjoying the lack of pressure to pick up our cameras during the day. Its been nice to utilize the darkness of these long nights in our photography. In keeping with our night theme for the month of November, this week’s contest is all about light effects in the dark. So pick up your camera and see what kinds of fun effects you can create in the dark with a lot of night and just a little bit of light. We’re looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

Head over to our Flickr Group to join in.

The choice of black and white on the dark background is excellent and makes the puppy’s lighter fur and shiny nose really stand out. We also love the subject’s adorable expression, not to mention the fact that grae w used a dog for his night portrait instead of a person. Way to change it up and keep us on our toes. Great job!

We’d also like to mention our runner up this week. Congrats to Scott Coulter for his striking shot, “Drum Major in the Dark.” We love the perfect use of moody light and profile to get this image.

Thanks to everyone who particpated this week. We enjoyed seeing your creative night portraits!

Man, I love this time of year. Besides the crisp air and the crunch of leaves, there are also all the yummy fall fruits to think about (and photograph). I’ve been trying, during this year in pictures, to take some snapshots of here and now. So, while I’m in the heart of fall, I thought I’d photograph some of the fruits that are so popular this time of year. (Don’t worry. Pumpkins already got their time in the limelight.) Apples first a couple weeks ago outside in natural light. Persimmons tonight testing out various light sources to see what I liked best. I ended up going with the dim light of the room from the low lamps (which helped give me that warm bokeh background), supplemented by a Coleman camping lantern off to the side to give me some reflection light on the shiny skin and a nice shadow on the wood table.

I have to admit though, I’ve never actually tasted a persimmon. These will be my first. I hope they’re good.

There are terrible fires burning in the dry hills nearby. The sky today was filled with these eerie dark smoke clouds. It felt and looked like dusk at mid-day. I snapped this shot as we were driving. (Don’t worry, I wasn’t the one driving!) I liked the contrast of the dark ominous skies with the tall power lines.

Here’s another night portrait with moody lighting for this week’s contest. This month, I am enjoying not having to scramble during the day to try to get some photos in before I lose all my light. With our night contests, I can make the most of the earlier sunsets and use the dark to my advantage!

There’s still time to get your moody and dramatic night portraits submitted to our group pool.

Digital Survival Kit

OK, so this isn’t a sale per say, as $19.99 is Calumet’s normal price. BUT, this does seem like a good price for a Digital Survival kit that could really come in handy. The best part is the size and little pouch which makes it easy to throw in your bag or pocket when you’re on the run.

Olympus Stylus 760 Weatherproof Digital Camera for under $100

Good camera. Nice price.

Continuing on with our Night theme for the month of November, for this week’s contest we bring you moody portraits in the dark. Get out that mood lighting at night and start shooting the people around you! Faces half hidden by shadows. Low, dim light. It all works for us. We want to see a more melancholy and introspective side to your portraits this week.

Join us over at our Flickr group to submit your photos to the contest and to follow along!
